Am I the only one who spends a good portion of my life dreaming of all the beautiful places in Europe where I’d like to get married to the love of my life one day? Europe is filled with so many bucket-list elopement destinations that I know it would be so difficult to choose just one. . . but if I absolutely had to pick, Italy would definitely be at the top of my list. From the charm of the Tuscan countryside, to the vibrant colors of the Mediterranean, to the energy of the city life, Italy truly has everything you could imagine for a dream destination elopement or wedding. In this guide, you’ll find all of my best recommendations to help you plan your perfect elopement in Italy, including my favorite locations, planning tips and more!

Do I really need to tell you why you should elope in Italy? 😉 The diverse beauty, the warm and welcoming culture, the variety of different environments to choose from. . . there’s nothing not to love about getting married to your soulmate in one of the most romantic countries in the world.

I really can’t even put into words what it’s like to explore the natural beauty and landscapes of Italy—you just have to experience it for yourself. But I’ll do my best in this next section of this guide, where I’m giving you a list of the best places to elope in Italy, from the vibrant coast all the way into the enchanting mountain ranges. Choosing the right elopement location for you is a huge part of the planning process, so don’t worry if you feel overwhelmed by all of your options—I’ll be by your side the entire time to give you my personal recommendations and advice!
Mountain Elopement Locations in Italy
The Dolomites
Here’s your sign to skip the big wedding and elope in the Dolomites instead! Imagine taking the money you would spend renting chairs and hiring a helicopter to take you to the top of a mountain that can’t be reached by foot. That’s exactly what Taylor & Mitch did for their elopement, and it was one of the most insanely cool experiences I’ve EVER had. The Italian Dolomites are unlike any other mountain range you’ll ever visit, extending from the River Adige to the Piave Valley in northeastern Italy. Everywhere you look you’ll be taken aback by a new viewpoint, overlook, or panoramic scene of these dreamy AF mountains, I swear you could never have enough time to explore it all. Whether you check out iconic spots like Seceda and the gondola up from Ortisei, or you find hikes that are a little more off-the-beaten-path, you’ll never forget your time in the Dolomites, adventuring through lush green hills, along the base of dramatic snow-capped peaks, and around vibrant blue alpine lakes.
Lake Como
Speaking of vibrant blue lakes, Lake Como is another phenomenal place to tie the knot in Italy. Located against the foothills of the Alps, Lake Como is by far one of the most iconic coastal destinations in the world—and for good reason! The dreamy turquoise waters, the close proximity to the mountains, and the luxurious lakeside villas make this a place you’ll never, ever want to leave. It’s one of the more high-end elopement destinations on this list, so be prepared to pay a bit more for your stay at one of those lavish resorts, but it’s all worth it for how easily accessible the insane natural beauty of the area is.
Tuscany
If you’d rather head into the lush countryside than elope in the middle of a dramatic mountain range, Tuscany is the epitome of Italian romance. Home to some of the best food, wine, art, and scenery in Europe (the world, actually), the Tuscan countryside is full of charm and magic, offering the perfect place to embrace the warm culture of Italy during your elopement. You’ll get to enjoy miles and miles of vineyard and olive groves covering the rich green rolling hills, diverse scenery of the Apennine Mountains, and easy access to the capital city of Florence—so there’s really something for every type of couple, whether you’re most at home hiking through the quiet hills or strolling through a world-famous museum!
Coastal Elopement Locations in Italy
Amalfi Coast
I’m sure you’ve heard of the Amalfi Coast before, given that it’s one of the most popular vacation destinations in Italy. Stretching along the southern edge of the Sorrentine Peninsula, this stunning coastline is most known for its vibrant fishing villages, insanely breathtaking views of the Tyrrhenian Sea, dramatic cliff sides, and wildly beautiful villas. Did I mention the rollings? The neverending lemon groves? The charming streets? Vacationing to the Amalfi Coast is already a dream come true in itself, but eloping here would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience you’d never forget.
Sicily
Head a little further south and you’ll find Sicily, a spectacular island in the central Mediterranean located right on the edge of the “boot” on a map of Italy. We’ve all seen the White Lotus and dreamt of having our own luxurious Sicilian vacation, right? Spend your time exploring the Greek temples that cover the island, or hiking around Mount Etna—one of the highest active volcanoes in Europe. Maybe you’d rather lounge around on the white sand beaches with a cool drink in hand and your private villa just a few steps away, or strolling through the charming streets of smaller towns and embracing the local Sicilian culture. Sicily is one of the most underrated areas of Italy for elopements, in my opinion, and is an absolute paradise for any couples looking for a scenic island elopement!
Capri
Just off the peninsula of Sorrento is another island you’ve probably heard of, Capri; most known for its scenic natural sights, rugged coastline views, luxury yachts, and, of course, glitzy oceanside villas. One of the coolest parts of Capri is the Blue Grotto, which is this super beautiful cavern where the water boasts a unique bright blue glow—10/10 recommend adding this one-of-a-kind experience into your elopement timeline, because how could you not?! Capri is a popular destination for celebs, so you will find quite a bit of glam and luxury around the island, but there are still plenty of amazing opportunities for any type of couple to enjoy even if that’s not your vibe!
Venice
How could Venice not be on this list? This famous Italian island is a must-visit during your time in Italy; literally nothing is more romantic than floating down the little canals in an iconic gondola. Can you imagine doing that in your elopement attire?! A dream come true, tbh. Venice does get pretty touristy, but it’s worth the visit for its gorgeous architecture, enchanting alleyways, gorgeous art, and picturesque bridges. If you want to get away from the crowds a bit, consider visiting one of the cutie nearby islands like Murano or Burano!

Rome
Onto a couple of urban locations for those of you who want nothing more than to stroll through the romantic streets of the prettiest cities in Italy, taking advantage of the exquisite local dining, historic museums, and vibrant nightlife! Nothing beats Italy’s capital city when it comes to seeing some of the most iconic wonders of the world, including the Colosseum, St. Peter’s Basilica, and the Sistine Chapel, of course. Can you imagine you and your love wandering down the streets together, hand-in-hand as you cross the TIber river, sip on a glass of local Italian wine, and listen to the sounds of the city—all before you’ve even tied the knot? Yes please!
Florence
Finally, you absolutely cannot skip over Florence if you’re visiting Italy’s Tuscany region. The city is famous for its massive collection of Renaissance art, picturesque architecture, dramatic churches, and rich history. If your dream elopement looks like exploring the streets of a historic city full of famous landmarks (like the Duomo Cathedral), seeing some of the most well-known art pieces in the world with your very own eyes (like Michelangelo’s “David” sculpture), and enjoying mouthwatering local dishes (such as Bistecca alla Fiorentina), then Florence is the place for you, my loves!
Best Time of Year to Elope in Italy
It’s hard to give you a singular best time to elope in Italy, seeing as though what’s best will be completely different for every couple, every elopement, + every location. Typically, spring and fall are the ideal times to visit any region of Italy, as you’ll enjoy warm temperatures, fewer crowds, and plenty of gorgeous scenery. However, certain regions of Italy are only accessible in the warmer months (such as higher elevation locations in the mountains), and others are best in the winter, when temperatures are cooler and more comfortable.
Here are a few key things to consider as you choose the time of year you want to elope in Italy:
- Weather: If you know you and your boo favor a certain kind of weather (e.g. sunshine with temperatures in the 80’s), that may be a priority of yours. On the opposite end of things, if you can’t stand being sweaty and would rather enjoy a cool day in the mountains, you may want to focus more on avoiding the seasons you don’t like! The weather conditions will be vastly different across different areas of Italy—the alpine climate of the Dolomites will get much chillier and windier, for example, than the Mediterranean climate of southern Italy.
- Location/Venue: If your main priority is being able to elope at your dream location, then prioritize that when choosing a season. Certain places may only be accessible during certain seasons, so you’ll want to make sure you do your research and know when you’ll be able to elope at your dream spot!
- Crowds: Summers in many regions of Italy often get VERY crowded, because who wouldn’t want to take a bucket list Italian vacay in the warm months of summer? If you want to avoid crowds as much as possible, consider eloping in the spring, fall, or winter, or at least at a location that doesn’t get quite as touristy.
- Travel Costs: The cost of hotels, transportation, and airfare is often higher during peak tourist season (summer), so keep that in mind when planning your elopement date + budget.

The legal stuff isn’t necessarily the most fun part of planning your elopement abroad, but it’s super important to make sure you have everything in order so you can have a stress-free, seamless elopement.

Can US citizens get married in Italy?
Yes! US citizens can definitely get married in Italy, as long as you follow the proper steps and obtain the correct documents. To get married in Italy as US citizens, you’ll need the following:
- Valid US passport
- Birth certificate
- Affidavit (“Dichiarazione Giurata”), obtained through a US Consulate General in Italy
- Atto Notorio, obtained at your nearest Italian Embassy or Consulate before traveling to Italy
- Declaration of Intention to Marry, presented before a civil registrar of the town hall where you plan to get married

Nope, the US will recognize your marriage even if it was legally performed in Italy!
Is it expensive to get married in Italy?
Tbh it really depends on where you choose to get married, and what your dream elopement looks like! If you want to keep it simple and low-budget, you really don’t need anything more than outfits to wear and a location to hold your ceremony—and that can all be relatively cheap. You could also go super intricate and plan a small wedding at a luxury villa with a group of guests, a fully catered dinner, complex floral decor. . . you can honestly spend as much or as little as you want on your Italian elopement.
Legal vs. Symbolic Weddings in Italy
If the process of getting an Italian marriage license feels a little daunting, you might want to consider a symbolic wedding in Italy instead! This means that you would go through the process of getting legally married at home in the US before traveling to Italy, and then during your trip, you have a ceremony that’s solely symbolic—aka has no legal stuff involved. Having a symbolic ceremony takes out a LOT of the stress of getting the proper documents and coordinating your trip with visits to the correct offices in Italy, and overall will make your trip a whole lot more relaxed + laid-back. But it’s completely up to you what you want to do + what feels right, and both options are absolutely doable!
